Being mobile web worker, or digital Bedouin is a lot harder than it seems. The temptations and distractions are varied and many. It requires a person be a self starter, to be able to make themselves work, even when they don’t feel like it.
One of the first things a person needs to do is have a mobile kit. You really do. Some kind of plan on how you will work, understanding that it will probably change drastically as you figure out what works for you. Your mobile kit will contain your mobile office. You will need to identify what you need (laptop) and what you don’t (printer). You will need to sort out what accessories you require, such as a mouse and what other items you want to carry.
You will need a good pack - not a computer case, briefcase, or attache. You need a computer backpack like the kids in college use (there are professional looking ones). The pack is more flexible in packing, has more space, has specialized space and is easy & comfortable to carry around.
Being mobile also brings all those things that you are looking for. Someplace outside the office that will allow you to focus and just do your work. It allows you to pick your workplace! This is more powerful than any other part of being a mobile web worker - you can choose based on your mood for cryin’ out loud.
The other rewarding thing about working mobile is, of course, that you are free to chart your own course. Whether you work for a company and are allowed to work outside the office, or on your own, you can plan your day and keep your boss/clients satisfied. Start earlier/later, schedule around the kids, whatever, it allows you to get more control of your life.
