Being a Mobile Web Worker

Being mobile web worker, or digital Bedouin is a lot harder than it seems.  The temptations and distractions are varied and many.  It requires a person be a self starter, to be able to make themselves work, even when they don’t feel like it.

One of the first things a person needs to do is have a mobile kit.  You really do.  Some kind of plan on how you will work, understanding that it will probably change drastically as you figure out what works for you.  Your mobile kit will contain your mobile office.  You will need to identify what you need (laptop) and what you don’t (printer).  You will need to sort out what accessories you require, such as a mouse and what other items you want to carry.

You will need a good pack – not a computer case, briefcase, or attache.  You need a computer backpack like the kids in college use (there are professional looking ones).  The pack is more flexible in packing, has more space, has specialized space and is easy & comfortable to carry around.

Being mobile also brings all those things that you are looking for.  Someplace outside the office that will allow you to focus and just do your work.  It allows you to pick your workplace!  This is more powerful than any other part of being a mobile web worker – you can choose based on your mood for cryin’ out loud.

The other rewarding thing about working mobile is, of course, that you are free to chart your own course.  Whether you work for a company and are allowed to work outside the office, or on your own, you can plan your day and keep your boss/clients satisfied.  Start earlier/later, schedule around the kids, whatever, it allows you to get more control of your life.

Review: Swiss Gear Urban Pack

Swiss Gear Urban Pack The Swiss Gear Urban Pack is a great addition to my mobile kit.  This is the first backpack computer case I’ve had and it really does fit the needs of a mobile worker.  This is a 5 compartment pack with additional expandable mesh pockets and multiple tie-down/anchor points for additional gear.

I happened to find mine at Target, though I can’t find it on the Wenger website at all.  Since I picked it up in May and had been eyeing it up for a few months before that, I’m betting that the new line of packs is out in time for “back to school” season.

The pack has a great padded back with an airflow system that helps keep you cool, even when carrying a full load.  The pack has room for all 15″ laptops, even the widescreen units (like mine), and is fully padded with a nylon & Velcro strap to secure the computer in place.  there is a huge center section that has room for books, notepads, cables, and other hardware you might want to bring with.  It also has a zippered compartment here that can keep cables or thin items separate from the main compartment.

In the center compartment there is also a separate padded holder to keep a CD or MP3 player protected and safe.  Along with this feature, is an external port to allow your headphones to pass through, but keep rain and such out.

The front compartment has the requisite sections for pens, keys, laser pointers, small connectors, cables, pocket change, and more.  Pretty much very flexible for anything you need at hand.  Other things it has room for: paperback book, plane tickets, conference/press passes, other essentials that you need when running from place to place.

Each side features a deep but narrow pocket which I use for the power adapter and cord.  Also, I put the AC/DC USB charging adapter in these pockets – very handy.  The left-hand pocket even has a sleeve for a 2-cell AA flashlight (such as a MiniMAG) that works very well.  Also on each side are adjustable straps for tying down any number of things.  This could work in conjunction with the two expandable mesh pockets on each side.  Just the right size for a water bottle, but could hold longer items as well – and use the straps to secure it along the side of the bag.

On the top-front of the bag is a solid patch of nylon where the logo is, and it also has adjustable straps that could secure more gear – like a rain poncho or such.  Underneath that are several heavy nylon loops that you can also use to secure additional gear if need be.

Overall, I’m extremely happy with this bag and will be using it for some time.  I can fit all my gear, including my DV camera import adapter, mic, and cables for doing video blogging work.  Really cool.

HTC Kaiser as the AT&T 8925?

htc_p4550_2 Well I was hoping to see the HTC Kaiser/P4550 on T-Mobile, but this may be good news for the AT&T crowd out there.  The only thing I would have added to the Kaiser is a VGA screen – just to add more resolution for pictures & video, not the interface.

Wireless USB makes it to market

Belkin Wireless USB Hub Can you wait for Wireless USB?  I’m getting a little antsy already!  I’m not sure how quickly it’ll be included in mobile gadgets and such, but as the devices are coming to market, it can’t be long.  It may be a really good Christmas for gadget accessories!

New Mouse – Logitech V450

Logitech V450 Laser Cordless Mouse for Notebooks Well, I recently picked up a Logitech V450 Laser Cordless Mouse for Notebooks to replace my venerable Microsoft Wireless Notebook Optical Mouse.  I’ve got to admit that for a number of years I’ve neglected Logitech mice, I’d tried them back around 2000 or so and was not impressed.

The new series of Logitech mice have changed my mind a bit, to the extent that I’ve switched over to a Logitech mouse from a Microsoft one.  The device I picked up is the V450 Laser Wireless model.  It has great precision and a nice sturdy feel – my Microsoft mouse feels “cheap” in comparison.

The device has a power button and just enough features to satisfy my needs (I don’t like too many buttons).  It’s a great upgrade for me and supports the palm of my hand a bit better than the Microsoft one did.  Overall a great mid-year update to my mobile kit.

Kudos to Logitech for all the work they’ve done of the last several years – good work!
