HTC Press Event Scheduled for June 5

It appears that HTC has some major announcement scheduled for their June 5th press event.  The event is just days before the Apple iPhone launch, and Engadget Mobile if it isn’t scheduled just to shake up Apple a little.

HTC Announcement

The invitation shown above is indicative of the lengths HTC is going to for this event – the most PR work HTC has done on for any announcement or launch, so it must be something interesting.  The one hint from HTC is that the announcement “heralds a new mobile experience that will change the way we use and control our phones”.

Consilient Push Email CoolSmartPhone.com is reporting on another provider for free push-email service.  Since I’m away for the Memorial Day weekend enjoying the rainy weather in northern Wisconsin, I’m not able to test this service out at the moment.

According to the CoolSmartPhone.com article, it supports POP3, Yahoo!, GMail, and AOL mail.  Hopefully I’ll have a time to test this service yet this weekend, but here is the links below if you are interested.

Windows Mobile Devices Drove Worldwide PDA Market to 40% Growth Q1 2007
Shipments of Windows Mobile PDAs grew 64 percent in the first quarter of 2007, and this strong growth helped propel worldwide PDA shipments to 5.1 million units, a 39.7 percent increase from the first quarter of 2006, according to Gartner, Inc.
“Microsoft Windows Mobile licensees accounted for nearly 3.2 million PDA shipments in the first quarter of 2007, or more than 60 percent of all PDA shipments in the quarter,” said Todd Kort, principal research analyst in Gartner’s Client Computing group. “This strong growth was surprising because Windows Mobile 6 will launch in the second quarter, accompanied by the launch of many new and improved models. Normally, consumers and businesses have constrained their purchases when upgrades are imminent.”

Zenum’s Opus – a new WM6 device

Zenum Opus Zenum’s first foray into the Windows Mobile device market is a strong contender on the Smartphone front.  While it is only a tri-band GSM device and lacks EDGE or 3G capabilities, the trim unit has a great screen and a good keyboard.

Engadget Mobile believes that CNET UK gave the startup a little too much slack for not getting faster data services in the unit and points out that the device is still 4 months from production.  They raise a good point – almost all of Europe and most of the US has 3G services, or EDGE at the very least.  So why bring a GSM/GPRS device to market now?

AMD Unveils Notebook Platform Puma

Looks like AMD isn’t out of the race yet (thank goodness), as it has a rival to Intel’s Centrino platform in the works. Puma, as its called, hits all the same mobile power saving points and features that Centrino is famous for including support for the upcoming hybrid hard drives (HHD).

clipped from www.informationweek.com

The next Turion processor is expected to take on Intel’s Centrino in high-end notebooks in mid-2008.

The overall platform, codenamed Puma, is expected to be available in high-end notebooks in mid-2008. The package is comprised AMD’s 64 X2 dual-core “Griffin” processor and a new mobile chipset, called the RS780. The chip package will include support for 802.11n, HyperTransport 3.0, and PCI Express 2.0.
AMD also said it focused on improved energy consumption on Puma. To do that, the chipmaker said it will place the two cores in Griffin on separate power planes, so they can be managed independently. If a job requires only one core, for example, the other can be placed on idle.
Puma is also expected to compete with Intel’s Centrino chips in the realm of hard drive support. AMD’s future mobile processor package includes support for hybrid hard drives (HHD) which can speed up boot times and take advantage of larger memory cache sizes.
