GigaOM » GPS Navigation: Nokia Looks to Cars

Nokia 330 Auto Navigation Well, well, well, Nokia is getting into car navigation systems.

Entering into the European marketplace, the Nokia 330 will compete with TomTom, Magellan, Pharos, and others.

Interesting how Nokia is continuously trying to expand their product suite into new areas.  I’m not sure how successful they’ll be at any of these, however, it is refreshing to see a company trying to improve itself and grow in new directions.

Everyone is talking about Windows Mobile “Crossbow”

While I’ve only linked to Engadget Mobile below, there are a number of screen caps of the latest beta version of Windows Mobile.  It’ll be an incremental upgrade to be sure – similar to Windows Mobile 2003SE – refinements to a stable release.

Guess I’m not as impressed as I hoped I would be.  The Windows Mobile GUI screams for a makeover, the base configuration being a good five years old or so.

Also, most devices employing Windows Mobile needs some new innovation.  Don’t get me wrong, the devices coming out are good and fill a need, but I think manufacturers could do better on the feature set.  Moreover, I think consumers should be demanding more and better innovation in the products being brought to market.

iPaq & Pharos GPS

Pharos Logo Well, my 4 year old Pharos GPS solution still works.  Last year I added a Seidio powered mount that attaches to the windshield, and that brought a new level of utility to the combo unit.

At any rate, my login at the Pharos support site still worked and I was able to download one of the maps I needed.  Seems I missed one of them a year ago when I downloaded the latest versions.

What I like about the configuration I have, is that its a modular system, I’ve swapped two PDAs with the same GPS unit, and several software upgrades during the last several years.  Odds are that I’ll replace the combo with a true all in one navigation solution in the next year, simply because they are finally at the point where the PDA, GPS, Software solution was 4 years ago.  Though the PDA based solution is still cheaper.

The real benefit to the current crop of navigators is that they are starting to specialize, high-end, low-end, automobile, marine, personal handheld, and recently motorcycle focused solutions.  Cool stuff!

What GPS/navigation solution do you use?

I’M ON VACATION

But I’ll be blogging.  And judging from the past few weeks, I’ll probably be blogging here at TML more than I have in the last month.

We’re heading out of town on a “road trip” for the next four days and I’m going to blog the technology pieces here!  For random “stuff” you can read my personal blog at RickMahn.com (gratuitous plug).

The main mobile tech that’ll be traveling with me:

  • T-Mobile MDA (mobile data via GPRS/EDGE services, Tunes via URGE [synced])
  • Dell Laptop (with WiFi, will use MDA as modem via Bluetooth)
  • HP iPaq w/Pharos GPS (Navigation, using MDA via Bluetooth for traffic updates)
  • Kodak digital camera for good pics, MDA for quick snaps
  • DC to AC adapter for charging the laptop in the car
  • Orb to stream digital video from my home system when we’re at the hotels

I’ll be posting on what works, what doesn’t, what WiFi locations work, coverage of T-Mobile’s GPRS/EDGE network, acceptance of my ’80′s radio hits by the family, and so on…

Bluetooth Stereo Headset Roundup

Bluetooth Logo With Bluetooth starting to penetrate the personal media player market, and Windows Mobile A2DP update supporting stereo audio in Bluetooth, I’ve been looking for some good information on Bluetooth stereo headsets.

Michael Oryl at MobileBurn has a full review of four Bluetooth Headsets. Head on over and read up on headsets from BlueAnt, Motorola, Nokia, and Sony Ericsson.

Give up your Pocket PC?

Is the current state of Windows Mobile Smartphone’s good enough for you to give up your Pocket PC (Phone Edition of course)? Jerry Raia over at Smartphone Thoughts has decided to.

While Jerry has a Moto Q, personally I would need at least a T-Mobile Dash, or other HTC Excalibur variant with more RAM before event trying this. I’ve become so used to the wide selection of software for my MDA though, I don’t know if I could give it up.

What about you? Do those slim & sexy little smartphones draw you in or do you need the flexibility of a Pocket PC Phone?
