Personal Tech Pipeline has a fine review of the Samsung Q1 Ultra Mobile PC (UMPC). Packing a full version of Windows XP (Tablet PC Edition), wireless networking, media player, 40GB disk space, and more into the size of a paperback novel, a UMPC will allow you to take most all of your computing needs with you everywhere.
Designed to be a “middle” device between a smartphone and a laptop/desktop computer, the UMPC is powerful enough for most tasks with a suprisingly large, bright screen. Like most moble computing devices, it won’t replace anything you already have - but is designed to be a useful adjunct to your existing systems.
I’ll be working on getting a review unit of this device (or a similar competitor) for a review here at TML as soon as I can. I’ve been interested in a Tablet PC type device, but have yet to pull the trigger on one for myself yet. This may be the unit to change that - UMPCs are targeted for the sub-$1000 market and would fit the usage pattern I’m looking for.
